4The Game of LifeAug 06, 2010
I got to play this game, once, as a child with my friend. I won, and he never wanted to play again, ever. So when my daughter said she wanted to play it, 30 years later, I said "Ok. Let's get it."

Set up

Set up took some time, since the gameboard had to be assembled. It takes an adult to set it up. There are a lot of small parts so I don't recommend it for a child or household who has a child less than 5 years of age (given the choking hazard).

Gameplay

There really isn't much to it with regards to strategy. There are choices of going to college, focusing on having a family, choosing a risky life, and choosing a safe retirement or risky retirement. The game is educational since the players have to count up the money, and realize the repercussions of life decisions. They also learn that children are expensive. Very expensive. They also learn the lessons of incurring debt through borrowing for college loans or a mortgage.

Overall

I don't have the past experience of the original game, and it was 30 years ago, so I don't recall the major changes. I find that this was a fun game for the whole family.

What a waste of money and time. This new, revised "Game of Life" isn't the one I remember from childhood.

It took about an hour to assemble the board, and another hour to peruse the rules that were almost six pages long. SIX PAGES. Halfway through the game we were still trying to figure out this complicated mess of a "game." So NOT fun. We quit shortly after the halfway point.

Planning to donate it; going to try to find a vintage version. If it wasn't broken, why did they try to "fix" it?!?

1THIS IS AWEFUL!Jul 02, 2010
Oh My Gosh the new version of life is AWEFUL it was my favorite game and then as time went on I lost the pieces so I had to buy this one/ its so annoying it was much more fun when you could be a doctor and make 40,000 or be an artist and make 100,00. also there aren't those little things like if the wheel spins off the computer consultant gets paid to "fix it" this one is so much worse!!!!! dont buy it or you'll be very disappointed i wish i had read the reviews BEFORE I bought it!

4life the gameMay 21, 2010
Life is a great game and is very amusing. It is something that would be great for a family game night or just having guests over to have some fun. Although I don't advertise this game for small children because it may be confusing and the small pieces could be lost. But I think this game is a very amusing and I recommend this game very much.

5Not the same as the old one....Feb 05, 2010
My husband and I ordered this game for our son. We both enjoyed playing the game as children and thought our son would like it as well. We were a little surprised that it had changed some, but 20 years later, we really shouldn't have expected it to be the exact same.

We actually liked the changes. They took us a few rounds to get it down, but we had a blast. Our son is asking us to play the game a lot. He has even taken it to his grandparent's house to play with them!

We also got the game on sale and even with shipping, it was still cheaper than buying at our local Wal-Mart.

So yes, beware, the game has changed, but just because a few people don't like change, doesn't necessarily mean the changes are terrible.

The thing is, if you really want to play with the old rules (ie choose your career vs choosing blindly, spin for gifts vs using the LIFE tiles, etc.) than there is no reason you can't.
